This proposal isn't to change OSM-Carto's rendering rules, purely to 
standardize the format of the existing names/refs of railway=platform 
entities no matter whether they're mapped as closed polygons or linear ways.

That said,  it would be ideal if they /were/ mapped as polygons instead 
of ways. I & many others are upgrading them.  Please feel free to 
upgrade any you spot.

You are correct, they're not necessary. As above, platforms are 
gradually being amended by contributors so that they more accurately 
represent reality. Please feel free to split any multiple labelled 
platforms into individuals.
