Please note that this linear nature isn't a problem on other layers.
For example, the Transport map (that I created) does some geometry
pre-processing, so that long platform names follow the general
orientation of the long, thin platform polygons. I think the results
at Clapham Junction look good, for example.

So I urge caution about simply removing the platform names, or
otherwise changing tags based on the limitations of one particular
layer. On the Transport map, for example, it will render the reference
by default, but if a name is available it prioritises that since they
generally contain text that is more useful and illustrative to map
users than a simple number - or even worse, some cryptic text with
semicolons.
