Hi again,

Yes, I should have made it clear I was talking about boundary/gateway signs
rather than "village green" ones. Very much depends on the area. For
example: beautiful ornate wooden signs in Norfolk village centres; great
lumps of stone with the name chiselled in on Yorkshire village boundaries.
Sorry for the confusion, though it has sparked an interesting discussion
here. I've revised my own tagging accordingly with the consensus that's
emerged.
