The problem with signs is that they can, and sometimes do, linger beyond 
their validity. There's a classic example of that in my town centre, 
where this heavily faded "One Way" sign no longer has any legal 
significance:

The street on which it exists is now completely split by fixed bollards, 
so both ends must, of necessity, be two-way. But the sign remains!
