Hi,
Thanks for the responses so far.

True - but the same bit of highway may have more than one long distance way using it (i.e. the same public footpath is shared across multiple routes). It would seem that naming a highway based on multiple signed routes wouldn't work?

Hmm, but the signs aren't actually indicating the name of the highway. They're more like direction signs, indicating a route to take which encompasses that highway.
Does someone (whether an individual or body of some sort) creating a signed route across a bunch of different public footpaths (for example), really set/change the name of the public footpath? It seems odd if that's really the correct approach to take.

Thanks - yep I had noticed the actual roads located a little further afield. They would obviously be excluded.
If anyone else knows about the GPS trace question, that'd be great.
Thanks!

Hi Nathan,
Yes they are -- long distance footpaths have waymarkers all along showing the name of the way.
Since footpaths often don't have any other name signs, and we are told to map what we find on the ground, that's the name of the path. It's certainly the name walker map users are most likely to be looking for.
I normally put such names in parentheses: "(Rossendale Way)" in addition to adding them to the relation.
cheers,
Martin.
