Possibly also relevant - there is work underway to produce an American specific rendering, demo here: https://zelonewolf.github.io/openstreetmap-americana and code here: https://github.com/ZeLonewolf/openstreetmap-americana/
There is discussion around it on the OSMUS Slack in the #american-map-style channel, which is here: https://osmus.slack.com/ (I don’t entirely recall how I signed up, but possibly via this: https://osmus.slack.com/signup).
Note: I’m not involved in any way, I just noticed it being discussed.
