Part of the issue is that a lot of names are entirely unofficial, but 
are nonetheless in common parlance. People, particularly locals who use 
them regularly, seem to dislike using junction numbers or even road 
numbers, and will give them names instead. Sometimes those names catch 
on, and sometimes they don't.

That's why I think that the best check, most of the time, is to see if 
the local media are using the names. If they are, then that's good 
evidence that their readers are using the names.
