In some conurbations, they are used to scope road names, e.g. 
<https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=oxford+street+name+sign>.  That's 
probably why Birmingham is featured on the wiki page, although a few 
examples from Google images suggest that the B is missed out on most 
signs, and only the number used.
