While it does not cover the special case of a 
church-that-is-still-very-occassionally-used-as-place-of-workship, a 
useful way of recording a "used to be a" building is simply to put 
historic=building (not a formally accepted value), a description=Former 
xxx and perhaps a date_start if known.  Every other building in my part 
of rural Yorkshire seems to be Former Methodist chapel. Useful for apps 
bring to life a neighbourhood culturally and historically but otherwise 
does not get in the way of current life.
