Yes indeed. Also, if you want to play with JOSM, load a GPX track into
it, zoom into the track if necessary, and from the Download box select
"Bounding Box". This downloads the existing data for the area visible on
screen, and you can see which nearby roads are already there and how
they've been tagged. Changes in JOSM are only sent to the server when
you click the upload button, so feel free to experiment.

Maybe it's just me, but I've never felt particularly comfortable in
Potlatch (the web-based editor), so I don't use it.
