A
rgh, I sent my reply from the wrong email address. Sorry if this goes out
as a double post.

Hi Dave,

Personally I love this idea. I've only been doing some local editing of
areas I know using the iD OpenStreetMap editor. I found the tradition tools
like JOSM a bit to much of a learning curve and I don't have the time and
attention to read all of what's in the wiki to be a good mapper. I'd much
more welcome some mapping meetups to learn hands on from more experienced
mappers.

I have recently been thinking about access to historical maps. The OSI has
good historical maps which have to be out of copyright by now but I don't
get the impression they are open to collaborating with OSM or giving us
access to those maps to use as tiles. It's a shame the only historical
tiles we seem to have of Ireland on OSM comes from a British University.

I have also wanted to contact the likes of Dublin Bus to ask them for the
GPS locations of all their bus stops so we can map all of them with
accurate date such as bus stop number and routes served. They have to have
this GPS data because they are essentially overlaying this data on Google
Maps on there own website. I'd also like to see the Transport for Ireland
Journey Planner use our OSM maps rather than their maps, as their maps are
very low on detail. But in the end I felt these companies would probably
just ignore such a request from an individual. So an establish OSM Ireland
organisation would be perfect to act in this regard.

All of the points you mentioned, I agree with and at the least it might be
worth meeting up either AFK or in IRC/Google Hangouts. I also think there
are great opportunities to collaborate with the other open data
organisations in Ireland and with Wikimedia Ireland
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Ireland_Community>.

I am still quit new OSM editing and know nothing about the OSM Ireland
community so I am very interested to see how this develops.

Regards,
Stephen Judge <https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/Stephen%20Judge>
