[OSM-talk-ie] 3 quick questions about MapCraft/MapWarper workflow

Hi Cathal,

I'm glad the townlands page is of use to you :)

To answer your questions:

1) Just very quickly, I took a look at the sheet you were working on and
fair play, you have a load of points on it, but be careful, the spread of
the points is leaving a large section of the sheet not warped as you have
clustered a few points close together in some locations, but left large
spaces between others. You may want another few points to the large areas
where none exist, it'll make tracing boundaries a whole lot easier later on
if the spread of control points is more or less spread evenly across the
sheet.

To answer your question, once you click the "Warp Image" button, it will
update in josm, at least that's what I've been told and I haven't seen any
indication otherwise....so far at least ;)

2) Once you get to 8, you can leave it as is. Changing it to 9 will occur
at a later date.

3) You can add links to the wiki page no problem, its a separate account to
the main OSM site though, so you'll need to create an account there. Some
things to keep in mind though:
- if you have found another resource that might be useful you need to be
very careful of copyright. The one thing we can't risk is, infringing on
somebody else's copyright as it could lead to having to remove large
portions of data from the OSM database.
- If you are unsure of the copyright status I would recommend, and
encourage, you to get in contact with the owners of the resource, in this
case Clare CoCo, and discuss with them giving written permission to allow
OSM to use their site as an aid while tracing townlands.
- The one caveat with this is the map they have on their site is most
likely an Ordance Survey one, so that will also need to be reviewed. If it
is still covered by the OSi copyright, then it will be off-limits. I know,
for example, Galway, Mayo and Clare library's are setting up a site with
out-of-copyright maps which we could make use of as a resource if they gave
permission and there would be no issue with the OSi as their copyright
would have expired.
- If they give permission, they only restriction they can impose is to
request attribution and at most a link back, which would be documented on
the contributors page in the left menu of the wiki -
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Contributors
- If it is a case that the resource is a set of out-of-copyright maps
online which has been georeferenced already, the best possible result is to
get permission to use the WMS layer which would then allow you to load it
straight into JOSM the same as we are doing with the TCD map sheets

So, by all means, if you've found something that could be useful to you
and/or other mappers, chase it up to get the necessary permissions to allow
people to make use of it freely. The best place to start is usually find
out who the GIS person is in the council, and go from there, up the ranks.
I'd suggest dropping an email first to get the ball rolling. You know what
they say, you don't ask, you don't get :)

If you need any support, just shout, I'm only up the road in Galway.

Thanks,
Dave
