"Is there a way to find out the date of imagery in use then?"

If you are using iD, edit the map, click on the 'Background' button on the right hand side, then 'Backgrounds' and tick 'Show Background Panel' It will usually show a date or range of dates. It doesn't show dates for 'Esri World Imagery (Clarity) Beta', but we know it to be around 2012.
