[Talk-in] Names of cities in some local language

Tanveer,

Can you give an example place where you see this behavior?

I suspect that two different objects are being rendered. Mapnik currently renders whatever is in the default "name" tag, rather than "name:en" or "name:hi".
Ideally, the labels would be localised per user. Requires a good deal of work .. a nice meaty project! I can sketch out some of the ideas around this if anyone is interested.

I know there's been discussion and some action around a local OSM India server. This would give full control, and it could be possible to render an English only tile set, a Hindu only tile set, etc.

-Mikel

Subject: [Talk-in] Names of cities in some local language

Hi,
I saw that in OSM the names of cities at lower zoom levels appear in
some local language(I think its hindi). Only on zooming in english
name is visible. Is there a way to turn of this stuff and see only
English names. Infact non hindi areas also show up in hindi. Some
language nazi at work here?
Tanveer
