The President of Mexico last month recognized the efforts of the HOTOSM
volunteers[1] to help the country in disaster preparedness for Hurricane
Patricia. More than 500 contributors mapped 9,000 kms of roads (5.6k miles
of road) + 72,000 buildings in 72hrs [2].
This is a great example of how governments of developing countries are
valuing the work of OSM for humanitarian needs and working with digital
volunteers for the benefit of the citizens. This comes at a time when the
Indian government is trying to regulate geospatial information[1] and
prevent open access to such data by the citizens.
As more of the country gets water stressed and reels form air pollution and
a garbage overlad, and now we prepare for monsoons and flooding, its time
to start thinking about how we can interface with the Government better to
manage such environmental crisis. If anyone is working on interesting map
projects along these lines, please share them, its time to start
collaborating!
