Hello mapping people,
We (DataMeet Pune chapter) are organising two events (Mapping parties) in
Pune, MH for talking about OSM and mapping some things, as a run-up to the
State of the Map Asia event next month.
1. Friday 26 October 2018, 4-6pm at Gokhale Institute, BMCC road
2. Saturday 27 October 2018, 2-5pm at GeoSpoc, Baner
The 26th one will have some urban and rural planning students from COEP and
Gokhale attending as major chunk of audience.
The 27th one will be non-specific.
Both events are open for all to join (and you're cordially invited!), we
will put up event links on meetup.com/DataMeet-Pune/ soon to catch RSVPs.
The sessions will be hands-on and participants will be asked to bring their
laptops.
I wanted to reach out to folks on this mailing list who are in Pune,
inviting your inputs and your involvement in conducting these events. The
main ways you can help is by:
1. Being a behind-the-shoulder guide and troubleshooter for the hands-on
mapping activities.
2. Being a validator on the mapping tasks we will do via tasking manager.
(this one's online so open to experienced mappers anywhere and will happen
post 27th, but let's interact once before you start validating)
We are collecting resources for sharing with participants here:
https://tiny.cc/punemapping (short link to this google doc
<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1FnwpPlas8j26O_YHPnxtoOpGgi0880k88fKWNUUyOGI/edit>
)
For mapping activities I am setting up tasks on tasks.teachosm.org. You can see
them here
<https://tasks.teachosm.org/contribute?difficulty=BEGINNER&campaign=%23SotMAsia18>.
Focus : tree mapping in Pune, rural roads mapping, settlements marking. We
will have limited time on hand so will aim to keep it simple.
>From my end, I'm just getting started with contributing on OSM (my profile
<https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/Answerquest/>) and have mostly been
involved in it through the tasking manager. Done some work in leaflet,
downstream from OSM, and have benefited a lot from it. We did a small pilot
<http://tasks.openstreetmap.in/project/89> last year.
It would be great to have an experienced mapper at the 26th event come and
share about their experience with the audience for 2-3 mins (We've got one
for 27th). If you are one, please write back with your OSM profile link.
*Some specific queries:*
1. Can you share your story of using data extracted from OSM in a major way?
2. Can you share some location in India that is "pristine" for road
mapping? (ie, clear visible roads and not mapped yet) (share privately so
its still pristine on event day :P)
3. Is there some specific use case for an urban planner or rural planner
that you can share? (preferably an Overpass Turbo query link?)
4. Can you share any timelapse to show OSM India coverage over the years,
or similar resources? I have a 3D globe one but it only glances by India
briefly.
PS: tasks.openstreetmap.in would have been ideal, but there's a blocking
issue <https://github.com/osm-in/osm-tasking-manager2/issues/14> there
right now so using another platform for now.
