Ooops... you did indeed! I should have had a closer look at your page
before posting.

I don't think so. But I think they cooperate with the CAI to verify the
trails - I just can't remember where I read this. I suspect the CAI has
lots of interesting data as well, but so far I haven't found a good
access to the CAI's data, which is probably because my italian isn't
good enough to do the research properly. I ended up with the impression
that it's all with the local sections, and if you want to get hold of
the data you have to do it section by section, and you won't usually get
data in a format like gpx.

I was initially pointed to http://sentieri.ipla.org/ by Mayeul when he
did research on behalf of his Via Alpina Mapping Party project, but
after browsing the data for a while I became frustrated because I could
not actually download any of the tracks. It was yet another one of these
'you can print your own map for this trail' offers, but I would have
been more interested in taking the lot and make it into a layer in my
GIS. Let's hope they open the data soon (if they haven't done so
already, I didn't investigate for a while), so we can put them on a
'proper' map and compare them with track data. I asked them, and they
said they would open the data eventually (like all the other data they
have), but they would prioritize which data they opened first. Maybe if
there is more demand they'll do it more quickly...
