The GTA is one of my pet projects. During the last years, I have made an
attempt to map as much of the GTA as possible for OSM, but so far I have
only managed to do so from Susa northwards. Most of this northern part,
including variations like the 'variante Walser', plus the lesser-known
continuation in the northern tip of the Piemonte, finally ending in
Cannobio on the shores of Lago Maggiore, are mapped. The trail is mostly
tagged as 'GTA' or 'grande traversate delle alpi'. I walked 95% of the
northern half myself, recording GPS tracks with my etrex and publishing
what was missing - my personal estimate is that ca. 60% were there
already. Now, in the north, very little is missing, but parts of the
route are not tagged GTA or tagged only with their local numbers, and
some of the trails are missing an SAC classification. The route changes
from time to time, so some data on OSM may be out of date.
I haven't yet gotten round to mapping or even looking at the data south
of Susa, but I intend to do so in the years to come.

Whoever can contribute to the GTA mapping on OSM is, of course, welcome
to do so. I doubt, though, that much coordination will be needed. It's
easy enough to find a section of GTA which is not mapped yet - south of
Susa ;) and just go ahead and do it. Of course it may be fun to do
something coordinated. Sadly as far as I know
http://www.klingenfuss.org/gta.htm
is not contributing to OSM. There is a lot of useful info there, though.
But since more and more of the trail is now on OSM, there is a good base
of trail information freely available. For those walking with a GPS unit
(specifically garmins like the etrex and the 60c) I have created a very
detailed synoptic GPS map from the CTRN and OSM data, which you may find
useful for your excursions in the area, please have a look at

How about you? All you need is an account with OSM's wiki. Everyone can
edit it, it's really quite simple! If you feel this page is a good place
to have a GTA entry, you can simply add it. It looks to me, though, as
if this page only has a few trails around Torino; for a prominent
long-distance trail like the GTA a separate page might be better.
I'll happily help improving the GTA data in OSM. I have enjoyed my
walking on the GTA a lot, and I think the information about it should be
freely available to everyone. I think the most important parts are
integrating changes to the route, improving the accuracy by having more
GPS tracks to work with, and adding missing SAC classifications - but
there may be other aspects I'm not aware of.

I could say the same. I was assured, though, that english is an
acceptable language to post in, so I'll stick with it for now.
