Thank you for the updates!
I will also attend the conference as the topics are also quite interesting
for me.

I recommend you a so called "Japan Rail Pass" (http://www.japanrailpass.net/),
which you only can buy with a tourist visa. It makes travelling very easy,
and the price of a one week ticket is the same as going from Tokyo to Osakaand back for the regular price. With that pass you will be able to see manyspots. You need to buy this pass before you enter Japan.

If you come for mapping unexplored areas, you can almost go anywhere ;-)
Let's see what the Japanese community can propose as good spots for
travelling. With the rail pass you can get almost anywhere.
