[Talk-ko] Eventual license change.

Hi all Korean OSM mappers.

The Korean map is starting to come along nicely now.

Sure there are a few issues of concern here and there, but I have to
say, in just the last 2 years, things have really improved a lot. I
remember when the country was mostly just a blank canvas.

One thing everyone needs to consider is the upcoming license change.
In the past when you have entered data on/into the map, all the data
became part of OSM with a Creative Commons license (CC by SA to be
exact). Soon OSM will be changing the licensing structure. The reason
for the change is because the CC by SA license really wasn't fit to
cover a database which is what OSM really is--a database of all the
nodes and ways we each have entered.

The new license is very similar but there are a few differences.
Rather than me trying to explain the changes, you can go and read
about it for yourself.
http://www.osmfoundation.org/wiki/License/We_Are_Changing_The_License
I am sorry there is no Korean translation of the page. Perhaps someone
can try and translate it for any others.

I will say, for my part, I have already gone ahead and agreed to the
new license. I don't see any real problems with the new OdbL (license)
and conditions. As I have said, it is very nearly the same as the CC
by SA license. I have even allowed all the data I enter to be put into
the public domain.

If you joined OSM in the last 6 months or so, you have probably
already agreed to the new license. If you joined OSM more than 6
months ago, you may need to agree to the new license for your data to
remain in the OSM database. If you want to agree, or check your
status, login to OSM and go to this page:
http://openstreetmap.org/user/terms
Above your Profile Description is a section called "Contributor
Terms", there you can see your status. If you have not agreed yet,
there should be a link to allow you to choose to agree.

The important point is ...

If you do not agree to the new OdbL (license), the data you have
entered will be removed from OSM when the change to the new license
happens.

You still have time to review and consider your choice. And still, if
you have not chosen when the license switch is finally made, you will
be given one final choice to allow your data to stay in OSM.

I understand everyone has concerns about all the work they put into
creating OSM for Korea, but I would hate to see some of that work
disappear.

Safe mapping and jama rek,

Robert
