[Talk-ko] Proposal to change current naming convention

This list has been quiet way too long. I hope everyone had a Merry
Christmas and Happy New Year.


I would like to propose a change to the current naming convention for
Korean places. I am working on a project www.openbaekdudaegan.org , and I
find the current naming convention of using parentheses cumbersome. When I
create printed maps, and base maps for my GPS and hand phone the extra
characters make the text difficult to read. I also think that it causes
unnecessary clutter on the OSM slippy map. If you look at my Baekdudaegan
overview map (www.openbaekdudaegan.org/maps.html) and compare the OSM base
layer to Google you can see the difference.

Since the Korean and Roman alphabet are completely different I don’t
foresee how this could cause a problem with the database. I have included
an example of my proposal below. My proposal would have the added benefit
of making the Korean language more understandable to users who are not
familiar with it by hyphenating the place name suffix to emphasis the
importance of place names. For example, Sunho-ri  instead of Sunhori.

I don’t propose we edit every feature and change the names, but try to
encourage users to adopt the new convention for future work. Or as a
compromise allow both conventions to coexist Assuming my proposal is found
acceptable the Korea OSM community, I plan on using this naming convention
for areas surrounding the Baekdudaegan trail.  My proposed change is
outlined below. Please let me know what you think.
