Not exactly free but ... I've been using Amazon S3 for a client. They have 8Gb up there and it costs around USD 2-3 per month. You only pay for what you store and bandwidth, so its pretty cheap.

Otherwise, you could try Dropbox. Works with Ubuntu too, and will give you 2Gb. You can set up Public folders, and private ones, and it will do photo galleries automatically. I use it to keep an offsite backup of all my photos.
