Nakakainggit naman jan...very supportive talaga ng Davao sa OSM... sana makasali ako sa susunod na mapping party.

Hi,

I am contacting you in regards to OpenStreetMap in the Philippines. In
case you don't know me yet, my name is Andre Marcelo-Tanner, I am from
Enthropia Inc., a company in the Philippines which is helping OSM
Philippines grow. Since we found that you are an active contributor to
OSM in the Philippines, we wanted to get your opinion as part of the
community on a very important issue:

"The formation of a formal legal entity to represent OpenStreetMap in
the Philippines"

There is some starting discussion on the mailing list already at
http://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/talk-ph/2009-May/000877.html
http://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/talk-ph/2009-May/000879.html
http://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/talk-ph/2009-May/000883.html

We would greatly appreciate comments, even a simple yes or no from each
member of the community as we know this is a community project and thus
the community should always have a say in everything.

Please send your replies to talk-ph at openstreetmap.org so that the
discussion will be public and everyone can join in.

Thank you very much for your time,

Andre Marcelo-Tanner

In the absence of max_speed data in osmph roads, I'm looking at
putting default values for garmin gps routing.  The Philippine law is
not very helpful and is probably obsolete:

Hi,

I emailed several OSM-ph mappers for a short interview about their
experience in OSM.  I intend to post their answers in my blog.  This
idea was actually borrowed from the enthropia people (either Ahmed or
Andre mentioned it in several mail discussions).  I hope my blog
readers can appreciate these experiences and contribute to OSm as
well.  Hopefully, this will be a weekly post until no more osmer
replied to my request.

First post is smackcode.

The said law is obsolete by my standards. However, some major roads post maxspeed limits. From what I know, NLEX has an 80 kilometer per hour speed limit but it probably tolerates anyone until the vehicle reaches 120 kph. (maxspeed:recommended=80; maxspeed:tolerable=120) SLEX, on the other hand, has a 60 kph speed limit from the Calamba exit up to the Alaska Milk area ( http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=14.36649&lon=121.04392&zoom=16&layers=B000FTF ). From that point up to the Nichols toll plaza, the limit is at 80 kph. Also, some stretches of the Pan-Philippine highway may have a 60 kph speed limit. Streets inside downtown areas probably have a 40 kph speed limit (and I doubt the fact that motorists traversing Jose Rizal Avenue in San Pablo are following the obsolete 10 kph limit.)

Hehehe, I was quite surprised myself!
Usually when they pull me over, the police will invent some laws on the
spot or refer to an ancient sign that everyone, including themselves,
ignore - if it's even visible. But of course they decided to enforce it
right now, while 350 other cars are breaking the exact same law during
the time we argue about it - yey! Yep, can't help but to love those guys
:) Can't be easy though, enforcing laws most people don't know exist.
Fines also seem to be random, but luckily it's possible to bargain...
Would still prefer a more structured and fair system though.

People lose respect for the law when it's ridiculous, irrelevant or both
- something which is painfully evident.
I think they should make the traffic laws a wiki! At least someone would
update them every now and then :)
Ronny.

tracking method/interval: time/1sec
lock on road: off
speed: 20-40Km/h straight road, 15-20Km/h curved road
open for suggestion on how I should do my gps tracking

Hi Jeff,
Nice to know you enjoyed it, give it a few days and you'll be addicted
heheheh. Don't forget to tag your gpx traces with "philippines" and
maybe add a "palawan" tag as well

welcome jeff!

Let me know how we can help you in verfiying the data.  I can send you
the files either as GIS format or if you are using Garmin GPS, a
custom Palawan map you can in your unit.
