Field or values?  If field, my personal preference is to re-use the 
value of the main tag. I.e. natural=beach, beach=sand so 
landuse=residential, residential=*. Drawbacks: 1) clutters main tag 
space, 2) may clash with existing tags, say landuse=military, miltary= 
... but then that also may be appropriate. I guess the alternative would 
be landuse:subtype or some such, I'll keep my eye open in european 
countries where zoning laws are very strict.
