That should clarify things, but having the same coordinates as Google’s do
raise issues about infringement due to similarities in rendering or data.
By the way, it is okay to look up GMaps to find some place with little or
missing coverage in OSM and cross-check when doing ground truth, but it’s
still better to survey the area without looking up another map (whether be
that Google or another), and map from scratch.
I would assume the people PARA hire to survey areas with little or no OSM
coverage do ground-truthing (even though there is still the pandemic and
going out is hard), but having seen additions of out-of-place POIs in some
edits by PARA map editors, I think we should recommend to PARA that they
should do a thorough review and quality check of third-party raw data
before they use it to map POIs and streets in OSM, as some of those could
be just copying from Google without doing any ground truth.
Next, we should also ask that PARA map editors should generally group their
edits in one large changeset instead of grouping one or a few edits in one
changeset to avoid giving other mappers a false impression or more changes
than they actually did. Another thing is to ask their editors to be more
careful when editing in areas where there is already coverage, where if the
POI they intend to add already exists, then they should better improve that
rather than replace it.
I have been asking ever since who is really that “JP Baje”. His edits in
Enugu, Nigeria aside, I don’t discount the possibility this one could be a
PARA map editor as well. I’m still intrigued who is really that guy.
