[Talk-ug] Taxis, Buses, and Bodas

Hi everyone,

I have an important question that we should all find a common agreement on. The question is: How do we want to map public transport opportunities in Uganda?

I know that in Uganda those mini-busses connecting towns are called "Taxi". This is, however, slightly confusing since in Western countries a taxi is considered a vehicle that you would temporarily hire for private use. In Uganda, I have come across he term "special hire". So a what's a special hire in UG, is called a taxi in the UK, Germany, and other countries.

Mini-Bus taxis rather resemble busses in the West. Busses would usually do regular routes with the opportunity for people to jump on and off at any stop. This is exactly how mini-bus taxis in UG opperate.

On the other hand, boda-bodas work like taxis in the West. They are privately hired for a short time for individual transport.

So my suggestion is this:

Let us map mini-bus station (like the so called "Old Taxi Park" in Kampala) as
public_transport=station

and Boda Stages as
amenity=taxi

How do you see it?

Blessings from
Jotam
