One of the nice things about Open Street Mapping in Massachusetts is the
imported Mass GIS road baseline.
I've been interested in cleaning up the unnamed roads.
These are easily found by creating a "filter" in JOSM:
Put a tic in column 1 to "Enable" the filter.
Put a tic in column 2 to "Hide Elements" on the display.
Enter "highway=residential and -name=*" in the filter column 3.
Put a check-mark in column 4 create an "Inverse" filter
Only the subject roads will be displayed in JOSM when you toggle the filter
by pressing the H key.
Imagery:
The TIGER 2015 imagery contains the names for many of these roads so it's
easy to identify and add a name to the roads.
The MassGIS L3 imagery especially helpful providing lot numbers and road
names.
The USGS Large Scale imagery
Tagging:
Most of the imported roads were classified as "residential" which is
inaccurate.
There are highway=residential roads that really don't have names.
Entrances to commercial areas I re-tag as highway=service
Roads to homes or apartment complexes I re-tag as highway=service,
service=driveway and access=private
I also find many roads on farms or in the woods that I re-tag as
highway-=track
Many times I find that individual ways are a combination of several ways.
For example
http://www.openstreetmap.org/way/9111243#map=17/42.80389/-70.92431
way 9111243 in Newburyport MA is a combination of Longfellow Drive, Newhall
Lane and Elizabeth Lane
Here I split the ways segments and reconnect them to the rest of the road
Un-named roads fall into several catagories
Thanks to the gis imports we have
new phone # 781-275-1737 (our old home number is now on my smart phone)
