Writing a whole app is a huge amount of work, and in general it's
suboptimal to need 12 mapping apps for 12 activities. Plus, for a trail
map, it needs to work fully offline.
osmand has a rendering.xml which can control how things show up. I
would expect that it can be made to show trails in colors, respect
access rules, emphasize walls, etc. However, those tags may have to
make it to the compressed format that osmand uses via OSMAnd's data
transformer program.
osmand works on Android and I think on iOS. On iOS maps.me works well
(or seems to, on other's phones) and I haven't tried it on Android. I
suspect maps.me has some stylesheets, or if not, that it would be easier
to add that than start over.

Indeed - it would be great to get more of those people using OSM.
