Hi,
For what its worth, protected= tag was introduced during the MassGIS
open space import, and is not used much outside of MA.
For your general municipal purpose, you could also add access=yes.
Also, if you doing a trail map, you can add access tags (yes, private,
permissive, etc) to show that a trail is OK to be on, rather than
tagging the properties.
