Yes, I've use alt_name whenever it seemed warranted.

It's a bit surprising, though, that there don't seem to be the 
corresponding 'alt_addr' fields (at least not "officially"). But these 
would allow people searching for an address that has road name variants 
(or more rarely, town name variants) to still locate it.
