You may wish to see how a lot of other styles render this.   This map is
in effect a list of many renders, in a fun but somewhat difficult form:

Hit reload to get a new dice roll on maps, and clicking on a tile gets
you a link and you can look at those renders.  It may be that some of
them are close to what you want, and some of them may be amenable to
changes.   For example:

  https://thunderforest.com/maps/landscape/

might be ok with better protected_area rendering, whild

  https://thunderforest.com/maps/transport/

probably would not be.
