There are at least three participants in MA who have, or will soon have,
Waylens Horizon cameras provided by Telenav to record streets.
I've had my camera for a couple weeks and learned a few lessons.
The camera doesn't have to be mounted too high on the windshield to get a
good view of the street. My first mistake was to mount it high where the
radio antenna built into the windshield was blocking the gps signal which
is received by the camera mount.
The camera mount is held to the windshield by a very strong sticky pad. I
mounted it under the rear view mirror and looped the power cable once
around the rear view mirror. If the camera mount fails it will just dangle
from the mirror.
I have peeled the mount from the windshield several times without a
problem. I use it in a second vehicle when I take trips.
I didn't realize that their is no need to be conservative when recording. I
leave the camera on all the time, recording the nearby roads repeatedly. I
concentrate on driving and not monitoring the camera.
Uploading data from the car over my home WiFi is not practical. One problem
is that the camera tries to start uploading data as soon as I pull into my
driveway. To avoid this I remove it from the mount a block from my home
and it shuts down in 20 seconds. I upload the data from a location close to
my router.
I put a black felt cloth from AC Moore to put on the dash to reduce the
reflection.
It takes a while for the GPS, Bluetooth Button, OBD2 data connector to
sync at start up. I don't wait for them to sync before driving. As soon as
I see a red dot circling the display I know it is recording images.
The unit comes with a separate bluetooth button that can be used to stop
recording data. This is not very useful because after whenever you come to
a stop for more that a couple of seconds the recording will start again.
