I've never had a dash cam so I'm not sure how they work.
The waylens will capture an image every second, and those images are
available to you to view or download *individually* at anytime. It should
be useful if I ever have to prove who caused an accident.

You should be able to just let it run all day. It stops recording when you
stop. Mine power downs when I turn off the ignition and restarts again when
I start the car.
The OBD helps fine tune the lat/long of the photo location. I read
somewhere that splitters have been used.
