In the latest update to carto, the osm renderer, a change was made to
render the name of any object tagged place=square.

In Massachusetts we have only a few place=square
<https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:place=square> tags and I know
there are many "squares".

I ran this query
"place!=square and (name ~ /square$/i or amenity=square) in MA"
in overpass-turbo.eu using the query wizard.
This resulted in:
4919 nodes
568 ways
13 relations
140 displayed pois
272 displayed lines
164 displayed polygons

The results are displayed in this image https://photos.app.goo.

Adding type:node to the query wizard
"type:node and place!=square and (name ~ /square$/i or amenity=square) in
MA"
returned 133 nodes, some of these have the gnis place=hamlet tag. Hamlets
are hard to identify these days, some may now be neighborhoods and others
I've looked at have an obvious "square" that is yet not mapped.

I'm planning to survey the locations on the ground in my area to see if
they could be better represented in OSM as polygons with the place=square
tag.
