This was in an emailed newsletter (the MassGIS GISette), and isn't on
the web site yet, but the short story is
new imagery to be acquired this spring
just like the 2019 imagery except
stereo pairs!
better accuracy specs (vs 0.1m rms !!)
The long story:
2021 Ortho Acquisition (#Article1)
MassGIS is very pleased to announce that it has contracted with
Quantum Spatial for a refresh of the statewide orthoimagery base
map. The imagery will be acquired in the spring of 2021. The
specifications are largely the same as for the spring 2019 imagery: 15
cm (nominal 6”) pixel resolution, 4-band (R, G, B, IR), leaf-off,
snow/ice free, and no flooding. Specifications for the 2021 imagery
differ from that for the 2019 in that the horizontal accuracy has been
upgraded to meet the requirements for ASPRS Class 1
accuracy. Project deliverables include stereo pairs that can be used
for compiling map features based on viewing the imagery in three
dimensions. The stereo pairs are expected to be especially useful to
cities and towns for planimetric mapping projects.
Presuming the vendor, Quantum Spatial, successfully acquires the
imagery this spring, the project schedule calls for delivery of the
imagery late in calendar 2021. Allowing time for MassGIS’ to conduct
quality assurance checks and process the imagery for distribution, and
presuming no quality issues or other setbacks, we anticipate the new
orthoimagery would be available in the first quarter of calendar 2022.
The State 911 Department and MassDOT are funding most of the cost,
with a small amount of money from the MassGIS’ budget to facilitate
distribution of the stereo-pair images. We anticipate that the data
will be provided as a web service available to anyone, as well as the
typical JPG2000 tile download, as we did for the 2019 imagery..
