Thanks for your thoughts, Hobbit and Greg. I guess I should have 
mentioned that I as of yet am one of the few remaining holdouts who 
doesn't have (and doesn't really want) a smart phone, but maybe this use 
case would be a reason for me to get with the times.

The Garmin Etrex series looks interesting, and the Etrex 10 is only 
$110, and may be the kind of thing I'm looking for that's just a 
bare-bones thing to handle walks through the woods.
