[Talk-us] Problems with Tiger railroad data

Very curious; I have also see railways presented as roads occasionally.
Also of note in the first example are the two parallel railway lines coming
from SSE (one a spur and one a rail that are visible in Potlatch in edit
more). Further to the east there are three tracks running parallel, all
railway=rail. From the aerial photography there appears to be only one
railway line (although there may be twin tracks close together but there
certainly aren't two lines that far apart). I have seen this before and
deleted the parallel one but was not sure if I was doing the rights thing. I
don't see any OSM tag to identify the number of parallel tracks which would
be useful rather that running twin tracks very close, or indeed running four
tracks parallel to each other but possibly this has been discussed in the
past.
I have also just noticed that railway spurs and sidings, yards etc have
recently been approved as OSM features, but not as per the Tiger import. In
the recently approved version all full width tracks are shown as
railway=rail and spurs and sidings have an additional tag of service=spur or
service=siding or service=yard. Are there any plans to have a Bot run over
the tiger information and update this tagging? Obviously it would have to be
planned carefully but the alternative of manual changes is tedious in the
extreme.

Subject: [Spam] [Talk-us] Problems with Tiger railroad data
I've noticed some problems with the TIGER railroad data is imported to OSM.
1. Spur designation inaccurate. While the majority of the main lines seem
to be accurately labled as "rail", there are /many/ places where the
distinction between rail and spur is inconsistant (i.e.[1]). I suggest we
either figure out how to fix this, replace all spurs in the US with rails,
or change mapnik, etc. to render spurs the same as rails.
2. Railroads imported as roads. I've found at least one instance of
this[2]. Browsing this location on the tiger browser shows it properly as a
railroad[3]. Any thoughts as to what could have happened or what can be
done to fix these?
