Hey Praveen,
I'm up in Skokie, nickvet419 is also a big contributor around the north
side that I've noticed. Take a look at
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Chicago and feel free to
add/comment on anything.
I didn't start contributing till I got my Freerunner back in July,
unfortunately school has come before any of that the last several
weeks. Locations isn't really designed for much besides showing your
position and sharing it, TangoGPS is really your only option (at least
until something happens with opencitymap).
GPS is not difficult, just turn it on (i.e., in Settings in om2008.* or
equivalent in an FSO-based distro), and get use the tracking in the
second tab of TangoGPS when you're ready. It can take awhile (like,
over ten minutes if you have bad signal) before the HDOP gets down to a
reasonable level, but once you have a fix that's a pretty good sign.
The AGPS is pretty easy to use and likely worth setting up if you're
impatient with it.
I don't know about Rolling Meadows, but a lot of the imported TIGER
data in Chicago needs realignment. Personal knowledge and aerial
imaginary can keep you busy for quite awhile.
