Generally, I agree to use semi-colons. However, in the particular case of 
the name tag, name_x was used by the TIGER import, and is well-used (~900K 
name_1 tags in US according to tagwatch). I've been using it for that 
reason, under the rare occasion that I've needed it. TIGER does seem to be 
overuse these alternate names, often containing things like "State Highway 
30" (which should be removed and replaced with "ref=xx 30" according to the 
wiki), long-obsolete names, or incorrect spellings.
