I see amenity=parking being only for public car parks, typically for
supermarkets, or multi storey car parks in city centres. On street
parking has been marked on the map for at least the past two years.
Take for example George Street in Edinburgh: http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=55.95277&lon=-3.20131&zoom=17&layers=B000FTF
Here is a great photo showing the on street parking http://www.flickr.com/photos/34887745@N02/3939373071
