A suggestion if you're not going to render trunk separately from primary:
My MapQuest/National Geographic road atlas from 1999 puts a line in
the middle of the road for a divided highway (in reality this includes
multilane undivided highways). It shouldn't be hard to parse the
number of lanes and if lanes=4 or more, oneway is no or unset, and the
highway is classified high enough, draw a line in the middle. Much
harder would be dealing with actual divided highways where the two
directions are mapped separately (and thus appear as one highway
except at high zooms).
