  If route relations are the only way to correctly render multiple routes, then it becomes just a rendering problem.  The current tagging scheme in the US supports rendering route information from relations.  Therefore the exact contents of the ref tag no longer matter as long as they are consistent everywhere.  Even the current Wiki format is acceptable with no changes.

  Agreed - the US:xxx stuff is pointless.
