Yes, this is exactly what I meant.  I could produce a demo.  However, this idea it has already been shot down by the same person who shot down my previous idea.

And these are the very type of things that were shot down before.  These
are exactly what I suggested.  My examples were smaller to show that
this could be done with a small shield.  What I have been told (on this
mailing list) is that if a consensus is developed for rendering shields
then the rendering will be added to Mapnik and Osmarender.

I like your idea.  Can we get a consensus to do this?  I think that the
big map providers should be a floor and not a ceiling.
