[Talk-us] Minimum standards for motorways?

  Question: what do people think about minimum standards for tagging
  something highway=motorway? In other words, would it be reasonable to
  tag a highway as trunk rather than motorway because it has no
  shoulders or a low speed limit (40 mph)?

In the US, we seem to have what I'd call "Interstate standards".
It generally seems like motorway is appropriate for

  anything signed as an interstate
  anything that isn't but meets the standards

I think it would be more useful to discuss an actual example where the
existing norms seem to lead to an answer you think it is inappropriate -
that seems to be what's behind your question.
