[Talk-us] US state extracts

Hi,

I've started making daily pbf extracts available for US states here:

http://download.geofabrik.de/osm/north-america/us/

I don't have all the states yet, I'm adding them at a rate of one or two
per day (email me offlist if you're burning to have YOUR state added).

As with all other Geofabrik extracts, these are true polygon extracts,
which means that I'm cutting right through cities that straddle a state
border.

As a technical detail, these extracts are cut out from the census areas
that can be downloaded too. The census areas themselves are cut out with
the "clipIncompleteEntities" option, i.e. ways that cross a census area
boundary are simply cut; whereas the individual states are cut out with
"completeWays", i.e. it should be possible to combine several states
without data loss *if* they are within the same census area.

(I don't even know if census areas are somthing that you guys are used
to work with - I had been looking for some sort of
not-completely-arbitrary subdivision of the US and this was one of the
first things I found on Wikipedia...)

In the long run, Ian Dees is planning to set up extracts on an OSMF-US
server and I'll probably just pass my scripts over to him when the time
comes. So you can view this as a sort of public beta for the coming
OSMF-US service.

Bye
Frederik
