the rule we frequently follow is to use the format of the name on the
sign as
the guideline for what to put in the name tag for a way.
there's a neighborhood in Rotterdam, NY where the signs for the side
streets along the main drag (Hamburg Street) are spelled out (e.g.,
Fourth Street)
but the signs interior to the neighborhood are abbreviated (e.g., 4th
Street.)
there are two issues here, 1) which should be on the name tag and 2) since
in any case either form could be used in an lookup, whether via Nominatium
or some other index, or in a GPS address lookup (and this latter applies
even when the name duality doesn't exist, as good practices for search
UIs should address the matter. i just saw Google maps nicely handle a
First vs 1st situation; we should strive to be that good as well.)
i have no proposal, i'm just opening the topic up for discussion of the
implications.
