Don’t know about the eastern mountains, but in the western U.S. the old USGS 7.5 minute (and decades ago the 15 minute) series of maps were the gold standard for anyone venturing out hiking or backpacking. For the search and rescue work I do, they are often still the base for any maps handed out to team members.
