When the locals keep using an old name for decades, without regard for
official signage to the contrary, at what point does an old_name
become promoted to an alt_name?

(My prediction: the new bridge across the Tappan Zee in New York will
be known as the Tappan Zee Bridge long after its signed name (Gov.
Mario M. Cuomo Bridge) is forgotten. I still know New Yorkers who say
'East River Drive' because their staunchly Republican grandparents
couldn't bring themselves to say, 'FDR Drive'. The 'Ed Koch Bridge',
formerly known as the 'Queensboro Bridge', is still the 59th Street
Bridge to those who use it.)
