I didn't mean to offend and wasn't talking about any particular roads
that you personally had your boots on - it is perfectly fine for someone
with local knowledge to make an educated guess ("didn't see a no
trespassing sign on the first 5 miles so I guess the next three miles
will be ok too"). Heck, even being familiar with the general customs in
a whole region can be sufficient to make such an educated guess.

I was just responding to Simon's "highway=road is useless" with the
general observation that having *some* type of road that implies "I saw
something from aerial imagery but I don't have the faintest idea whether
you can actually go there without being shot" might not be the worst idea.
