By the way, if there's any concern that removing refs would make less 
sophisticated maps unusable, there's a possible middle ground: keep the 
initialism in the way's ref, but replace the route relation's ref with 
short_name or unsigned_ref as appropriate. Way refs already depart from 
what's signposted for other reasons (particularly the postal 
abbreviation prefixes) yet are no longer the most machine-readable 
representation of route numbers. For one-off routes, we can treat the 
initialisms in way refs as a form of graceful degradation for less 
sophisticated renderers that don't have any need to parse the tag value.
